Rebuild Your Credit with a Secured Credit Card

For those with bad credit scores, regular credit cards are going to be very hard to obtain. You need to improve your credit rating in order to be eligible for one. A secured credit card can help you accomplish this.

A secured credit card has a collateral cash deposit. This collateral acts as security in case you won’t be able to pay your monthly credit card bills. The credit limit for a secured credit card is usually based on the amount of the security deposit. The credit limit can either be equal to or lower than the security deposit for at least the first few months. Some credit card companies are willing to increase the credit limit after you have made prompt payments for a particular number of months.

A secured credit card is similar to a prepaid credit card because in both instances a deposit is required. However, the deposit in prepaid cards is depleted as a direct result of one’s purchases. For a secured credit card, on the other hand, the security deposit remains intact for as long as the credit card owner pays his or her monthly credit card bill.

It is crucial for you to make prompt and full payments of your monthly card bills. You have to be very careful not to leave a balance on your monthly statement. Otherwise, it will defeat the purpose of obtaining secured credit in the first place.

Since a secured credit card is basically for the improvement of your credit rating, you have to make sure that the credit card company will actually report your payments to credit bureaus. Otherwise, the whole exercise becomes futile with respect to the recovery of your credit rating. Moreover, it will do you good if you can negotiate with your credit card company not to declare to the credit bureaus that your credit card is in fact secured. This will have better impact on the improvement of your credit score, as well as, hasten the process of rebuilding your credit history.
